Health Care Lacks in IT Security

Despite the numerous patient health information that is stored and transmitted across healthcare systems, healthcare infrastructure struggles with proper security.

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society conducted a survey in 2020 to gain a better understanding of healthcare security across the United States. The large threat that many medical industry experts face are phishing security incidents which is the initial hook for significant security incidents.

Despite the the significant number of security incidents in different organizations, cybersecurity only accounts for 6% or less of an organization’s IT budget.

For starters, ensure that your practice or organization has basic security controls such as anti-virus software and firewalls in place.

Telehealth

In this day and age, the majority of practice visits have shifted online to prevent the spread of COVID and keep individuals safe. More and more practices have shifted to online medium such as Zoom to meet with their patients in a virtual atmosphere.

Here are some Zoom safety tips to protect your practice from IT concerns

  • Update – Frequent updates allow bugs in the software to be overridden and your risk of compromise is lowered.
  • Password Protect – Adding a password to your meeting can reduce your risk of being Zoom bombed by unwanted guests
  • Waiting Room – Enabling this option can stop Zoom bombers from entering your chat and allows the host the screen everyone before entering.
